Alex Hillman talked about the potential hybridization of private offices and coworking spaces.

Private Offices and Coworking Spaces

Innovation comes from the interactions of different people.  Designing for these interactions is very valuable but can sometimes be over measured.  It matters less whether it is a private space or coworking space. It matters more on how and why people are choosing to be there.  Think about what people are coming for and how you can make sure they are getting what they came for.

The biggest problem with putting private offices and coworking spaces together is that people are going to choose what they are most familiar with.  This tends to be private offices. Therefore, people are drawn to it whether or not they need it.

There is nothing wrong with having private offices.  However, more work is needed to facilitate interactions.  You have to work to help people understand the difference between private offices and coworking spaces and when to choose which.  It is all about understanding intent and incentives and making sure they are in line.

Additionally, keep in mind that private spaces are typically tied to square footage.  This can be a huge limiter. It creates a limited revenue stream and a distraction from the value that coworking spaces are able to create.
