Sam Abrams and Alex Hillman talked about burnout.
Recognizing Burnout
Burnout can take different forms depending on the person and time. When burnout starts to happen, there is a sort of shut down in communication that occurs. People do not know how to help when you tell them what is wrong. When there is no communication, you start to assume people know what you need and then get frustrated when they do not deliver. This causes even less communicate and feeds into the burnout.
Communicating is emotional work. Asking for help can take a lot out of someone. It is not that someone does not want to communicate or that they are trying to hide something. They are usually just tired and do not have the capacity to explain what they are feeling.
Recovering from Burnout
Taking time off and disconnecting from work is one of the best ways to recover from burnout. Time off lets you come back more rejuvenated.
It is important to get away from the reactive stuff. Step back and think about what you are working towards. When you spend all of you time reacting to situations you find yourself in, you feel out of control. The first thing you can do to start recovering from burnout is to take some control back. You can do this by choosing what you work on next. Rearrange your time, schedule, workflow, etc. It is all about creating certainty and figuring out why you are in the space. Re-calibrate and ask what you want to prioritize.
